The Smart-bikes Coming to Hoboken!

Bike Eddie

Get ready to roll Hoboken! The three cities of Hoboken, Jersey City and Weehawken are going into partnership! This coming summer, the largest next-generation bike share system will debut in these cities.

The mayors of all three cities are very excited about implementing this system which is an “affordable, sustainable and convenient transportation option.”  It’s good for local businesses, as well as for the environment. The best feature is that it is at no cost to the taxpayers.

“Bike and Roll”, the largest bike rental company in the United States will operate the system, using technology that is developed and manufactured by “Nextbike,” a pioneer in the bike-share industry. This innovative system will use “smart bikes,” as opposed to “smart docks” which are expensive to install and maintain.

The possibilities for the use of this run the gamut. Residents and visitors will be able to use them for running errands, getting to work or maybe even view properties with me! A large percentage of the business is expected to come from the tourist industry. Pavilions, located in Hoboken and in the other communities will include services such as bike rental (of course!), helmets and other safety support and biking equipment.

Using sponsorships, advertising and user fees for financing, the cities will receive a percentage of the profits once the expenses have been met. The project is expected to be a model bike-share system for use in cities across the nation.

This summer should be an exciting time in the Hoboken area. We are on the cutting edge of the environmentally friendly transportation industry.  Sounds like a great plan to me.

Let me hear what you think about all of this!

Happy biking!

Eddie
