Choosing the Right Condo

So, you’ve decided that now is the time. You are going to make the move from a house to a condominium. Here in the Hoboken area, you have a wonderful array of choices. Whether you move to The Huntington in Hoboken, 15 Warren Street in Jersey City, or one of the other great options, there will be adjustments to make.

Many people are opting for condo living for various reasons. It’s not just for singles and retirees anymore. When you look for just the right place, take into consideration your lifestyle and the changes that may be required by your move. The first step in that direction is to check on the rules and regulations of the owners association for the complex you are considering. If you have children, you will certainly want to see how they are accommodated in any new place before committing.

These rules are usually developed in order to make life in a condo attractive to people in various situations. Many of them are simply a spelling out of the “golden rule”, that is, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” For instance, if you live on any other floor than the ground floor, it means that you have people living under you. Consideration for them would entail a minimum of bumping and banging noises. Carpeting and the judicious placement of area rugs can help that. Check on the rules about noise.

One important rule that may be a game changer is the pet policy. If you can’t live without your parakeet or your gerbil, find a place that allows pets. Please don’t think that just because your pet is tiny and caged, you can keep it anyway, even if the rules don’t allow it.

The corridors and elevators in a complex are common areas, and should not be used as if they are part of your unit. There is probably a list of dos and don’ts in the rules. Also, try to discover what the parking situation is. You may need to purchase or rent a parking spot. Another thing that may be regulated is the color of your draperies and/or blinds. This is to keep an air of dignity to the outside of the building, and it helps maintain the value of the property.

Let me know if I can help you find your dream condo!
