Happy Independence Day!

USAHappy Independence Day!

With the troubles in the Middle East and other parts of the world, Americans should more and more appreciate their liberty, hard won in the American Revolution, and preserved and defended throughout our history. In the Jersey City/Hoboken area, we know how to celebrate our freedom.

Naturally, families will be gathering throughout the area for picnics and barbecues. There will be swimming and baseball games. Then, when night begins to fall, the skies will light up with spectacular displays of fireworks. There are several places where these can be viewed.

Macy’s usual display will not be over the Hudson River this year, but over the East River. You needn’t travel to New York to see some impressive pyrotechnical extravaganzas, however. Jersey City will hold its annual Freedom & Fireworks Festival, complete with rides, games and lots of food. It will benefit the Folds of Honor project which sponsors scholarships for the spouses and children of fallen warriors.

State Fair Meadowlands in East Rutherford is having fireworks on both July 3rd and 4th. This state fair, the largest in the area, is offering free admission for active military personnel with proper military ID. It’s something to visit, if not on Independence Day, another time.

Other areas are having local celebrations that promise to be fun for the whole family. Here is a link to some information that may help you find the display that is most convenient for you.

Everyone knows that the 4th of July means lots of lights and noise, especially after dark. Many people have their own fireworks. I would urge you to take whatever precautions are necessary to keep you and your little ones safe from accidents. Let’s make sure all our kids still can play the violin (or the piano, banjo, whatever!) after the 4th!

One more thing. I ask you to be considerate of the veterans in your area who may be suffering from PTSD. Find a place for your hijinx that is relatively isolated. We don’t want our recovering heroes feeling like they’re back on the battlefield.

Again, Happy Independence Day! How will you celebrate your freedom?
