Downtown Jersey City

Historic Downtown is the inland western portion comprised mainly of low-rise apartments and buildings, but rich with new development. As its name might suggest, it’s filled with both historic charm and a wealth of bustling stores and restaurants, as well as attractions such as the Jersey City Museum. The Waterfront has seen a vast amount of development in recent years, including art galleries, stores and restaurants, and high-rise waterfront towers. It’s growing into a trendy arts community of museums, attractions, and unique outdoor dining spots.

Bergen-Lafayette

Formerly “Bergen City”, Bergen-Lafayette is actually comprised of several of its own unique neighborhoods. It’s commonly referred to as “The Hill” and is tucked between Downtown, Liberty State Park, and the West Side. It includes a diverse collection of architectural styles and residences, including 19th-century rowhouses, Art Deco apartment buildings, and Victorian mansions. Its main shopping district of historic storefronts can be found along Monticello Ave, and major landmarks include the Fairmount Apartments, the Temple Beth-El, and Lincoln the Majestic.

The Heights

Located in the northern end of the city atop the Jersey City Palisades, The Heights overlooks both the Hudson and Croxton to the west. It’s comprised of mostly two and three-family homes and low-rise apartments, and beautiful Victorian and Edwardian architecture is common. It’s also home to Pershing Field, a park featuring green space, baseball fields, a swimming pool, and an ice rink.

This southernmost neighborhood of Jersey City is mostly residential, though it is home to a number of important city landmarks. Residences are mostly single-family or duplex homes and low-rise apartment buildings, and several parks—including Liberty State Park, Mercer Park, Bayside, and the cochrane Athletic Field—can be found throughout the area. Also within the district are the Afro American Historical and Cultural Society Museum, the Jersey City Public Library, the former Greenville Hospital, and Jersey City University.

Journal Square

This centrally-located neighborhood is, unsurprisingly, a diverse hub of business, transportation, and residential communities. Many local, state, and federal agencies of Hudson County can be found here, as can the Journal Square Transportation Center—home to the PATH and bus stations and the Port Authority Trans Hudson—as well as Hudson Community College, Saint Peter’s College, and the Jersey City Army. There’s also a strong sense of diversity within the community, with ethnic hubs such as India Square offering unique offerings of shops, eateries, and attractions. Housing is mostly brownstone, pre-war apartments, and frame houses, though the area has been attracting urban planners and architects for the development of new high-rise residences and multi-use buildings.

Lincoln Park offers tennis courts and athletic fields, a track, a golf course, biking and running paths, and picnic areas. Housing ranges from Victorian and Edwardian mansions on the quieter and more natural western side to the more urban eastern sections of pre-war and Art Deco buildings along the Hackensack River. Like much of Jersey City, it’s expanding rapidly with residential, retail, and recreational areas, and is home to the West Side Avenue Station, the only branch of the Hudson Bergen Light Rail.
